Tickets

Ticket sales begin on 1st July from our website and from 1st September at Palmers Garden Centre, Sala Street. Both 1-day and 3-day passes will be available this year and also some special rates for groups. 1-day passes will be $30 and 3-day passes will be $50. Full details about ordering and collecting passes to be posted in due course.

Thank you Rotorua exhibiting gardeners for 2025!

Recently we held our first get together, in Pam's garden, for this year's exhibiting gardeners, Sandy Cleland from Palmers and the committee. It was the perfect venue on a mild and sunny autumn afternoon and we were able to sit in the shade of beautiful old English plane trees. After light refreshments the gardeners were updated by Carol Bannister, Sandy and the committee on planning progress to date.

We look forward to hosting another gardener gathering later in the year.

Reregistration of Rotorua Festival of Gardens Inc.

Work is progressing behind the scenes to reregister our society under the new Incorporated Societies Act 2022 and update our constitution to comply with the new rules.

Funding success

An application for funding, prepared by Marian, to the Rotorua Trust has been successful. Thank you to the Rotorua Trust for this support that will help cover the costs of promotional signage.

We had a fabulous afternoon on Tuesday with some of this year's festival exhibiting gardeners, and the wonderful Sandy from Palmers it was great for the committee to be able to share some of the process in leading up to the festival and also to have so many enthusiastic gardeners sharing their experiences 🌷🌱 We have over 40 gardens in the festival this year with lots of new ones, Tickets go on sale later in the year.

Festival tip -

Take some coin because cash is king

The variety of things for sale in gardens is quite extensive this year. It ranges from pottery to garden art, plants and seedlings to bee products, outdoor furniture, garden tools, locally produced condiments to refreshments. Remember cash will be required to purchase anything for sale in the gardens so have some in your wallet 💚

A sneak peek at one of the enchanting new gardens in this year's festival !

I asked owner Jenna to tell me a bit about her garden -

Growing up I was often captivated by the all the magic within fairytales and storybooks, especially The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. That a wardrobe, could lead to another world was just magical in my eyes!
Fast forward to four years ago, my husband Brent, and I stumbled across a property in Hamurana, Rotorua, and discovered an abandoned shadehouse. Brent suggested that we could turn it into a chicken coup, but I immediately fell back into memories of my childhood, and imagined a magical garden- accessible through a secret Narnia wardrobe. The rest is history. Over the last few years, myself, Brent and artist friend Maria have put many hours, and much love into creating a Storybook world, that you enter though our very own wardrobe, you will be transported into a magical secret garden full of colour, fairytales and familiar faces, a meandering yellow brick road will lead you through all the beloved story books of your childhood, interwoven by plants, flowers and whimsical garden art. We hope that all the love and joy we have experienced creating our garden will lead you back to your own childhood magic, we can't wait for you to enjoy our beloved creation. 🧚🏻 Jenna Austin, Brent Austin and Maria Hermans.

The original arbor was planted in 1920's. in 1988 it was replicated with new Eureka lemon trees planted at each upright post, which have since been trained to cover the arbor.

Matariki has long been linked to plants-

Matariki marks the end of the last year’s harvest and the start of next year. Traditionally the appearance of the Matariki star cluster signaled a time to plan and prepare the land for spring crops. The disappearance of the cluster in autumn signaled the time for food crops to be harvested and stored.

Traditionally, if the stars overhead are bright and clear, it indicates a favourable growing season, and plantings start in September. If the stars are hazy, the planting time is postponed until October.

Tyburn Monastery

The steep climb to the cross at the top of the hill has seats where you can contemplate the view. A grotto is set into the hillside. Stunning lake views and tranquil gardens make this an ideal retreat for the Benedictine nuns. A formal rose garden reflects the Monastery, calm, quiet and contemplative.
